Learn how sales tax collection is documented in your Seller Dashboard and in your Sales Reports, and how you can use this information to better understand your responsibilities.
Seller Dashboard
The payout information on your Seller Dashboard includes a breakdown of your payout. It shows your total payout, your net earnings (this is the amount you keep), and, if applicable, the amount of sales tax collected in states where you have designated nexus. Remember that you are responsible for remitting all of the sales tax paid out to you. Learn more about remitting taxes here.
Sales Details Tab
The Sales Details tab and Sales Details report download organize the data and include sales tax information. Note that the Sales Details report is more detailed than the Transactions by State report, and shows individual items sold on each line. In this report, if a Buyer purchases three products from your store in one order, it appears as three separate line items.
Relevant information in the Sales Details section:
“Sales Tax (Seller Remits)”
This column shows how much sales tax has been collected on your behalf for transactions in states where you have indicated nexus in your TPT account settings. TPT will include collected sales tax as part of your monthly payout, and you will be responsible for remitting this amount directly to the states where you have registered. The earliest you would need to remit is February. We will follow up as we get closer with additional guidance. Learn more here.
“Sales Tax (TPT Remits)”
This column shows how much sales tax has been collected on a transaction occurring in a state for which TPT is able to remit taxes (e.g., an MPF state or a state where TPT has reached a voluntary agreement). TPT will be responsible for remitting this amount. Use this column as needed for your filing purposes.
Subtotal for “Tax Collected for Seller to Remit”
This subtotal can be found at the top of the Sales Details tab and shows the total amount of sales tax that has been collected on all your transactions in the selected time period. This is the total amount that you will be responsible for remitting to the states where you have registered.
“County”
County-level information to your Sales Details tab/download. This may be helpful if you’re remitting to a state that requires county-level data.
Sales Details download
You can also find additional details and information in the full report download:
“Seller Name”
We added your first and last names to the header of the CSV to validate that the data displayed belongs to you. This is so that, should you share this data with an accountant or keep it for your records, you have a way to confirm that the data is yours.
“County”
We’ve added county-level information to your Sales Details tab/download. This may be helpful if you’re remitting to a state that requires county-level data.

Transactions by U.S. State tab
There is another helpful tab on your Sales Reports page called “Transactions by U.S. State.” This tab includes information about transactions in U.S. states and regions. You can use this tab to view your state-by-state sales summary and download sales details by state. You can also filter this report to view information from a specific date range.
This page is sorted into three sections:
- States where you have a responsibility to remit (any states where you’ve declared nexus)
- States where TPT will remit taxes on your behalf (marketplace facilitator states, and states where TPT has reached a voluntary agreement with the state — learn more here)
- All other states (for example, states without marketplace facilitator laws or states where you have not declared nexus)
If you’re using this report to determine where you may have economic nexus, you may find Avalara’s state-by-state guide helpful. Once you have reviewed this data, please be sure to indicate where you have economic nexus and have also registered for a sales tax license in your TPT account settings. This will enable TPT to collect sales tax on your behalf in applicable non-marketplace facilitator states.
Note that the “Transactions” column shows the total number of orders. An order can contain multiple products — for example, if a Buyer purchases five products from you in one order, that would be counted as one transaction.
Sales Tax Exports tab
Another helpful tab on your Sales Reports page is called “Sales Tax Exports”. If you’re using TaxJar or Avalara TrustFile to help you file and remit the sales tax you’ve collected on TPT, you can use this tab to generate and download a compatible report for TaxJar or TrustFile. Read more about remitting taxes here.
